Description

What is a Spray Coat running track?

A spray coat running track is a common breathable polyurethane running track system consisting of a base layer of elastic granules and a surface spray coating. It uses a mixture of black, environmentally friendly granules and polyurethane adhesive to create the elastic layer, then sprays a wear-resistant layer of polyurethane mixed with EPDM granules on top, achieving a balance of elasticity, wear resistance, and slip resistance. spray coat running tracks are suitable for school playgrounds, community sports fields, and leisure fitness tracks. They offer a short construction period, high cost-effectiveness, excellent air permeability and drainage, and a comfortable feel, effectively reducing sports injuries.

What are the four surface layers of a Spray Coat running track?

Spray-painted running tracks are generally divided into four main structural layers:

Marking layer – 50mm wide, using a wear-resistant marking paint to ensure legible and durable markings;

Coating layer – approximately 3mm thick, sprayed with polyurethane and EPDM granules, creating a non-slip and wear-resistant surface;

Cushioning layer – approximately 10mm thick, using a mixture of black environmentally friendly granules and polyurethane adhesive to provide elasticity and a comfortable feel;

Primer layer – Applied to the asphalt or cement base, it seals, protects against moisture, and enhances adhesion, ensuring the overall structure is strong and durable.

Spray Coat  Running Track Technology

The bottom layer is made of adhesive (JN01) mixed with environmentally friendly rubber particles.

The surface layer is made of EPDM rubber particles and track surface material (R09) sprayed together.

After molding, it has a porous structure, which is breathable and water-permeable. It can be used for training and competition immediately after rain or flushing the venue.

Spray Coat Running Track adopts a 13mm spray coating structure, including a 10mm thick PU adhesive and SBR rubber buffer layer, a 3mm thick PU coating and EPDM rubber spray layer, and is equipped with a primer and marking paint.

Installation

Professional Installation Process

Our team follows strict international standards to ensure the highest quality installation:

1. Site Preparation & Base Inspection

Thoroughly clean the base surface (asphalt or concrete) to remove dust, dirt, oil, and debris.
Check for cracks, hollow areas, unevenness, and drainage slope. Repair damaged parts with repair materials.
Ensure the base surface is dry, firm, and flat with a tolerance within ±3mm over 3 meters.
Apply special primer evenly to enhance bonding strength between the base and rubber layers.
Drying time: 4–6 hours (depending on temperature and humidity).
2. Base Layer Mixing & Laying (SBR Rubber Layer)
Mix SBR rubber granules and solvent-free PU adhesive at a weight ratio of 1:8 using a professional mixer.
Pour the mixture onto the primed surface and spread evenly with a trowel or paving machine.
Compact the base layer with a heavy roller to ensure density and flatness.
Control thickness: 10mm, 11mm, or 13mm according to project design.
Curing time: 12–24 hours before proceeding to the next step.

3. Base Layer Surface Treatment

After full curing, clean the base layer surface to remove loose particles.
Lightly polish uneven areas to ensure a smooth surface for spray coating.
Check overall flatness, drainage, and compactness before spraying.

4. Top Layer Mixing (EPDM Spray Coat)

Mix EPDM granules (1–3mm) with special spray-grade PU binder at a ratio of 1:4.
Stir continuously for 5–8 minutes to ensure uniform consistency without agglomeration.
Use a closed mixing system to prevent solvent evaporation and ensure stable performance.

5. EPDM Spray Coating Application

Use a high-pressure professional spray machine with dual guns for uniform spraying.
Spray in two thin passes to avoid dripping, bubbling, or uneven color.
Maintain a spraying distance of 50–60cm and speed of 3–4m² per minute per gun.
Control top layer thickness: 2–3mm (total track thickness 12mm/13mm/15mm).
Ensure no blank areas, especially at the track edges, curves, and joints.

6. Curing & Drying

Natural curing after spraying: 24 hours at 25℃.
Lower temperatures require longer curing; avoid construction in rain, fog, or strong wind.
During curing, prohibit pedestrian traffic and protect the surface from dust or pollution.

7. Line Marking & Finishing

After full curing, use a laser marking machine to draw standard track lines.
Apply special PU line-marking paint with high adhesion and weather resistance.
Line width: 5cm for standard running tracks; strictly follow IAAF (World Athletics) standards.
Curing time for lines: 6–12 hours.

8. Quality Inspection & Handover

Test items: thickness, flatness, shock absorption, vertical deformation, color uniformity, and line accuracy.
Clean the entire surface and remove construction waste.
Provide a complete test report, construction record, and maintenance manual.
Train client staff on daily maintenance and long-term care.
The entire installation process for a 1000㎡ UNI-Spray Coat Running Track normally takes 7–10 days, including base preparation, rubber laying, spray coating, curing, and line marking. We provide on-site supervision and technical guidance.
Maintenance Guide

FAQ

FAQ

1. What is the difference between a spray coat running track and a sandwich running track?
The main differences are structure, cost, and application. A spray coat track has a breathable SBR base with an EPDM spray top layer, offering lower cost, faster installation, and better drainage, ideal for schools and community centers. A sandwich track has a multi-layer structure with higher shock absorption, suitable for professional competition stadiums.
2. How long does a spray coat running track last?
The UNI-Spray Coat system has a lifespan of 5-8 years for school and community use, and 8-10 years for professional training centers, with proper maintenance. We offer a 3-5-year manufacturer warranty for all our products.
3. Can a spray coat running track be installed on an existing surface?
Yes. Our system can be installed on existing asphalt or concrete surfaces, as long as the surface is level, clean, and free of cracks. This makes it an ideal solution for stadium renovation projects, with a fast installation time of 7-10 days for a 1000㎡ facility.
4. Is the spray coat running track environmentally friendly?
Absolutely. We use 100% solvent-free, non-toxic PU adhesive and pure EPDM granules, which meet global environmental standards (EU REACH, RoHS). The system is odorless during installation and safe for athletes, children, and the surrounding environment.
5. What maintenance is required for a spray coat running track?
The system requires minimal maintenance: regular cleaning with water and a soft brush, avoiding heavy vehicles and sharp objects on the surface, and annual professional inspection. We provide a detailed maintenance guide and after-sales support for all clients.
6. Can you customize the color and thickness of the running track?
Yes. We offer a wide range of color options to match your school or facility's brand, and customizable thickness (10mm-15mm) to meet your specific usage needs. Our team will provide professional recommendations based on your project requirements.
7. Do you offer global installation support?
Yes. We provide end-to-end solutions for global clients, including free on-site survey, professional design, installation supervision, and after-sales support. Our team has experience in projects across 30+ countries, ensuring smooth project delivery.
